Travel is more than the art of collecting passport stamps. Travel isn’t simply touching down on the tarmac in a strange place, hanging out at the hotel bar, and buying a few postcards at the closest tourist market, where you brag to anyone within earshot about all the exotic places you’ve been. Travel is about the essential nature of experience. Travel is trying new things – especially when new things scare you to bits – exploring foreign places, eating strange foods, making friends with new people, and exposing yourself to fresh points of view. Travel is finding bliss in a new reality, whether that reality is found in your own backyard or on the open road. This is how I look at travel, and I like to think that my work reflects that.

When my editors send me on the road, they expect me to deliver that bliss to their audiences. I pride myself on being able to get under the skin of a place, whether I know that place well or I’m visiting for the first time. It doesn’t matter if I’m covering myself in glow paint and crashing underground supper clubs in San Francisco, stick fishing for sardines atop a teak pole in Sri Lanka, tending goldfish at a monastery in Burma, or surfing icebergs in the Icelandic backcountry – I work hard to bring home material that is unique, quirky, and thrilling. My job is to inspire people to step out of their comfort zone and experience the world in a way they never thought of. I live for the story, and I’ll do anything to bring it home.
